This June, OSNS was excited to take up a special invitation to joinAustralia’s leading Cultural Organisation: The Abbotsford Convent, which is home to over 100 of Australia’s leading Organisations and Creative Practitioners. There are Architects, Theatre Groups, Writers, Jewellers, Potters, a Radio Station, Illustrators, a Cinema, Film makers, editors, Artists, and Photographers.
The Convent itself has quite a history, and was originally a beautiful turn of the century nunnery, and was thankfully saved from development by some excellent activists back in the nineties. Melbourne’s boon in high density development is making the Convent a rare and much sought after place to be! Especially as its grounds of over ten hectares are only 4km from Melbourne’s CBD. There are 3 lovely cafes on site, and two big smart galleries that feature some excellent shows. The Convent is close to the Yarra and next door to Collingwood Children’s farm too.
Our Studio is in what is known as “The Mercator” and was originally the attic of the Convent’s barn. As you can see the pitched roof of the barn is a spectaular feature of our the sanctuary of our new Lettercraft Lab. The light is always clear during night and day, and the space is kept warm at night by soft quiet hyrdronic heating. Never too hot or cold. It is incredibly peaceful and all our students love the space !
It feels like being in the country, and as you can see from the view from the window, it is a lovely spot to work in and visit.
So I look forward to welcoming you to the astounding new Lettercraft Lab at the Convent ! Definitely one of its kind in Australia !
